Game of Thrones is an American fantasy drama television series created by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss. It is an adaptation of The Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin's fantasy novel series, the first of which is A Game of Thrones. The show is filmed in Belfast and elsewhere in Northern Ireland, Canada, Croatia, Iceland, Malta, Morocco, Scotland, Spain and the United States. The series premiered at HBO in the United States on April 17, 2011 and will end in its eighth season, which will premiere on April 14, 2019.

Set on the fictional continents of Westeros and Essos, Game of Thrones has several storylines and a large cast, but follows three story arcs. The first bow is over the Iron Kingdom of the Seven Kingdoms, and follows a web of alliances and conflicts between the noble dynasties that vie to claim the throne or fight for its independence. The second arc of history focuses on the last descendant of the kingdom's deposed ruling dynasty, who was exiled and is plotting a return to the throne. The bow of the third story follows the Night's Watch, a long-standing brotherhood charged with defending the kingdom against the ancient threats of fierce peoples and legendary creatures that lie north of the Wall, and an imminent winter threatening the kingdom.

Game of Thrones has attracted a record audience on HBO and has a large and active international fan base. It has been critically acclaimed, particularly for its acting, complex characters, history, scope and production values, although its frequent use of nudity and violence (including sexual violence) has been criticized. The series received 47 Primetime Emmy Awards, including the Outstanding Drama Series in 2015, 2016 and 2018, more than any other prime time television series. His other awards and nominations include three Hugo Awards for Best Dramatic Performance (2012-2014), one Peabody 2011 Award and five Golden Globe nominations for Best Drama Television Series (2012 and 2015-2018).

From the cast, Peter Dinklage has won three Primetime Emmy Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (2011, 2015 and 2018) and the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor - Series, Miniseries or Television Movie (2012) for his role as Tyrion Lannister. Lena Headey, Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Maisie Williams, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Diana Rigg and Max von Sydow also received Primetime Emmy nominations for their performances.
